The Buzz about Buckwheat

Dig into the beauty and potential of buckwheat with MFAI Research Director and Agroecologist Dr. Nicole Tautges! Often grouped with grains, buckwheat is actually a gluten-free seed crop in the knotweed family. First cultivated in Asia thousands of years ago, it has since become an important food crop in culinary traditions around the world, from France to Tibet to Japan.

During this Community Call, Nicole will share practical insights into growing, harvesting, and processing buckwheat in the Midwest. She’ll also share what MFAI’s field trials are teaching us about buckwheat varieties, along with findings from her flavor trial which explore consumer preferences and the qualities people are looking for in buckwheat for food.

This webinar is part of an ongoing series focused on the food crops that sustain us, connect us to our heritage, and help us adapt to changing climates and food systems. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and share experiences from the field.
